My photograph of Alcatraz Prison is centered around capturing its desolate and solitary nature. Alcatraz Island, also known as “The Rock,” is a place of both legend and lore, situated in the San Francisco Bay. Through my lens, I was able to capture the prison's haunting atmosphere during its operational years through composite photography techniques and vintage film grain. Depicting an early-morning guard shift change, the photograph showcases the interplay between light and shadow, highlighting the similarities between the prison and the unforgiving environment surrounding it. I use lights and fog to draw the viewer into an ethereal world, where the lighthouse stands as a lone beacon in a desolate and hopeless environment. The photograph tells a unique story, inviting the viewer to contemplate the history and lore surrounding this iconic landmark.
